Sri Lanka, Colombo: After the escape of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, a state of emergency has been imposed once again in view of the deteriorating situation in the country and fierce demonstrations. The protesters have reached the Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Office. The security personnel are firing tear gas shells to stop them. Significantly, after the news of the President leaving the country, there is tremendous anger among the general public. The Prime Minister’s Office informed media organizations that a state of emergency has been imposed in the country and a curfew has been imposed in the Western Province. On the other hand, former Prime Minister and Member of Parliament Ranil Wickremesinghe has been made the acting President. According to the country’s constitution, if both the President and the Prime Minister resign, the Speaker of the Parliament will serve as the acting President for a maximum period of 30 days. Parliament will elect a new Speaker from amongst its members within 30 days, who will hold office for the remaining two years of the current term.
