15th President Draupadi Murmu – Journey from Zero to Peak

India, the world’s largest democracy, created a new history when Draupadi Murmu took the oath of the country’s highest constitutional office. She is the first tribal and second woman President of the country, as well as the first President of the country to be born in independent India. Murmu, who was once a teacher, came into politics at the behest of the MLA of the area. Contested and won the first election of a councilor in 1997.

By the way, this journey was not so easy for her. She had to face many difficulties to reach here. There were many obstacles in the journey, but she did not lose courage and kept on moving forward. Perhaps this is the reason why today they are being discussed not only in the country but also abroad.

She was born on 20 June 1958 in Baidposi village of Mayurganj district of Odisha. Belonging to the Santhal tribal ethnic group, Draupadi’s father’s name is Biranchi Narayan Tudu, who was a farmer by profession. She has two brothers. She is married to Shyamacharan Murmu. They had two sons and two daughters. A daughter died in the year 1984. Her childhood was spent in extreme deprivation and poverty. Nevertheless, she completed her graduation from Ramadevi Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar. She became a teacher to teach her daughter. He was born on 20 June 1958 in Baidposi village of Mayurganj district of Odisha.

The women of every household in the Tribal area, will have to be educated.

Belonging to the Santhal tribal ethnic group, Draupadi’s father’s name is Biranchi Narayan Tudu, who was a farmer by profession. She has two brothers. She is married to Shyamacharan Murmu. They had two sons and two daughters. A daughter died in the year 1984. His childhood was spent in extreme deprivation and poverty. Yet he did not turn his back on education. He did his schooling in the village. From 1969 to 1973, she studied in Adivasi Residential School. After this she took admission in Rama Devi Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar to do her graduation. She was the first girl in her village to complete her graduation.

While studying in college, he met Shyam Charan, who is studying in a college in Bhubaneswar. Meeting friendship and then friendship turned into love. Both started liking each other. They both wanted to spend their lives with each other. However, Draupadi’s father was not happy with this relationship. At first her father refused, but seeing the stubbornness of the daughter, the father finally approved the relationship.

On the occasion of marriage, a cow, a bull and 16 pairs of clothes were given to Draupadi from Shyam Charan’s house as dowry. It is noteworthy that in the Santhal community, dowry is given to the family of the girl on behalf of the boy. He started his career as a teacher and took up this profession for his daughter. However, trouble fell on them one after the other. After the death of the younger daughter in 1984, Lakshman, a 25-year-old son, also mysteriously died in 2009. She had not yet recovered from the shock of her son’s death that in 2013, her second son died in a road accident. She was completely broken by it.

Right to education is the right of every boy and girl, regardless of background, to deprive them is like animalistic behaviour.

To overcome this misery, he took the help of spirituality. She joined Brahmakumari Sansthan at Mount Abu, Rajasthan. His restless mind started to calm down due to his joining spirituality here. In 2014, her husband working in the bank also passed away. Now the family has only married daughter Itishree Murmu, who works in a bank. He contested for the first time in 1997.

Elected councilor in Rairangpur district of Odisha. After this she was also elected as the vice-president of the Zilla Parishad. Contested assembly elections in the year 2000. After being elected MLA from Rairangpur assembly, he was made Minister of State with independent charge in the BJD and BJP coalition government. In 2002, he was made Minister of State for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Department in the Government of Odisha. In 2006, he was made the state president of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha. In 2009, she won the election from Rairangpur Assembly for the second time on a BJP ticket. After this, she also contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2009, but could not win.

In 2015, Draupadi was made the governor of Jharkhand. He served as the governor till 2021. As the first woman governor of Jharkhand, she returned a bill to amend the CNT-SPT passed by her own government from the assembly. Not only this, he returned the file related to the formation of Tribal Consultative Committee (TAC) in the government. This proves that she will not remain as a mere rubber stamp and will not blindly approve of any file. Now she has become the first tribal President of the country. After taking oath as the President, she said in her first address that even the poor can dream in India and the interest of the countrymen will be paramount for them.
