His father’s name was Ramoji Rao Gaikwad, and he was a police constable. His mother’s name was Jijabai, and she was a housewife. He is the youngest of four siblings, with sister Aswath Balubhai and two elder brothers Satyanarayana Rao and Nageswara Rao. He did his early education at Gavipuram Government Model Primary School.

The elder daughter, Aishwarya, married actor Dhanush on 18 November 2004, and the younger daughter, Soundarya, married businessman Shwin Ramkumar on 3 September 2010.
