Assam Police Hosts First-Ever Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Child Protection In a pioneering step towards strengthening child protection mechanisms, the Assam Police, under its flagship initiative Shishu Mitra, organized the first-ever Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Child Protection in Guwahati. The event brought together a wide array of key government officials, judicial representatives, legal authorities, and civil society organizations with the shared goal of ensuring the safety and welfare of children across the state.The event was graced by Justice Kaushik Goswami, Judge of the Gauhati High Court, who served as the chief guest and delivered the keynote address. Justice Goswami emphasized that child protection is not the responsibility of a single department, but a collective obligation of all duty bearers across sectors.Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh underscored the importance of collaboration and synergy among various stakeholders to effectively address child protection issues. “Protecting our children requires not just laws, but coordination, compassion, and commitment across every arm of governance,” he stated.The dialogue witnessed the participation of high-level officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home & Political Department, and senior-most Secretaries from the Departments of Women & Child Development, Labour Welfare, and Health & Family Welfare. Significant contributions were made by the POCSO Judge, Director of Prosecution of Kamrup Metropolitan City, and representatives from UNICEF India, who highlighted national and international best practices in child safety.The forum also brought together District & Sessions Judges from Kamrup, Nagaon, and Morigaon, along with officials from the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR), Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, State Legal Services Authority, Special POCSO Judges, Social Welfare Departments, DLSA, Childline, Juvenile Justice Boards (JJB), Child Welfare Committees (CWC), and other critical child protection bodies.The interactive discussions focused on legal safeguards for children, inter-agency cooperation, challenges in implementation of POCSO Act provisions, rehabilitation of child victims, and early intervention strategies to prevent abuse and exploitation.This landmark dialogue marks a significant move by Assam Police to position itself as a proactive partner in child rights protection. With the active participation of multiple sectors, the initiative under Shishu Mitra aims to foster a comprehensive and integrated approach to child protection in the state.
