Sindhu reaches quarterfinals of women’s singles

New Delhi: India’s two-time Olympic medalist shuttler PV Sindhu has advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinals of the Singapore Open Super 500 badminton series. In the pre-quarterfinal round today, third seed Sindhu defeated world No-59 Thuy Lin Nguyen of Vietnam 19-21, 21-19, 21-18 in a tough match that lasted three games. At the same time, HS Prannoy also managed to make it to the last eight. Sindhu was challenged by Nguyen of Vietnam and won the first game 21-19. After this, there was a tough competition between the two in the second and third games as well. Nguyen was not ready to give up. In men’s singles, World No. 19 Prannoy defeated world No. 4 and third-seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 14-21, 22-20, 21-18 in a three-game match. The match lasted for an hour and nine minutes. It was Prannoy’s second win over Chou Tien in three weeks. The 29-year-old will face Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the quarterfinals. Mithun Manjunath, who shocked Kidambi Srikanth in the last round of men’s singles, ended his journey at the Singapore Open. He was defeated 10-21, 21-18, 16-21 by Nhat Nguyen of Ireland. At the same time, India’s Ashmita Chaliha, who shocked Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in women’s singles, also failed to make it to the next round. She was defeated by Han Yuwei of China 9-21, 13-21.
